The PuckPedia Hockey Show Episode 38: Raising the Gaudreaus' ft. Guy & Jane Gaudreau
Episode 38 of The PuckPedia Hockey Show features two very special guests: Guy and Jane Gaudreau, the parents of John and Matt Gaudreau, as well as their daughters Katie and Kristen.
We dive right into the Gaudreau family story with Guy, a Hall of Famer at Norwich University in both soccer and hockey, talking about introducing the boys to sports as young as 18-19 months old, and how John and Matt ultimately chose hockey over everything else (0:30). John even turned down a varsity soccer coach who promised him a Division 1 full ride because he was committed to hockey.
We then discuss the boys growing up as Flyers fans in South Jersey, just twenty minutes outside of Philadelphia, and playing on a AAA team called the Little Flyers. John always said he wanted to put on a Flyers jersey before his career ended no matter what. Guy and Jane were in attendance at the Flyers game on Saturday night as Philly closed out the Penguins series.
Then we dive into the boys' recruitment to Boston College, including how both John and Matt were originally committed to Northeastern before the coaching staff was let go, which led to their releases and ultimately their paths to BC (4:30). John won a national championship in his first year, earned the Hobey Baker Award, and shared the ice with Matt before heading to the NHL.
We then discuss the USA Hockey tribute to John and Matt and what that meant to the Gaudreau family (9:00). We then pivot to the Gaudreau Family Foundation and the upcoming 5K on May 16th, which people can participate in both in-person and virtually (15:30). The foundation's mission is to honor the memory of John and Matt while supporting causes close to the family's heart: grassroots hockey development, special needs hockey, sled hockey, blind hockey, animals, and building a playground for handicapped students at Archbishop Damiano School, a school deeply connected to the Gaudreau family.
We wrap up with details on how to get involved with the in-person and virtual 5K (19:30), which last year reached all fifty states and participants from multiple countries, with NHL players and their families joining in. Guy and Jane close by expressing their heartfelt gratitude to the entire hockey community for the love and support shown to their family.
